Stormy Business Climate Makes Obtaining a Liquor License More Affordable for Smaller Businesses

The recession begins to help small businesses such as restaurants with advantages such as lower priced liquor licenses.

Glendale, CA (IPRWIRE) Sun. Nov. 30th, 2008 -- On October 9 the Wall Street Journal featured a front-page story titled "First Into Recession, California Shows Possible Future for U.S." Yet for the California restaurant industry, a recession may prove to be a double-edged sword. "Bursting price bubbles aren’t always bad," said Jon C Mejia, national sales manager for Amlex. "For many of our clients, this is an opportunity to get on a level playing field with their better funded competitors."

For example, in January of 2008, prior to the economic collapse, county recorder notices showed that full liquor licenses sold in Los Angeles County in the $80-90,000 range, effectively putting a liquor license out of range for many smaller operators.

However, by October of this year, sellers were selling their licenses in the $45-50,000 range as concern grew that the tanking economy would mean even lower prices in the near future. That 50% drop in price means smaller businesses can again afford to compete with their better-funded competitors. So what other positive changes can our current economic climate bring to restaurant operators?

"I'm anticipating seeing far more cooperation from city zoning departments," said Mejia. "With tax revenues drying up due to the drop in real estate values, helping business owners rather than delaying their liquor license applications seems to be on the rise."

The backbone of the restaurant business traditionally has been small business operators and the price decreases are an unseen benefit in an otherwise stormy business climate.

Is the Food and Beverage Industry on the Leading Edge of the US Recession?

A recent survey conducted by The American Liquor License Exchange (AMLEX), a California based food and beverage industry consulting firm, reveals that troubles inundating the banking sector have arrived on the shores of the restaurant industry.

Glendale, CA (IPRWIRE) Mon. June 30th, 2008 -- According to an article that appeared in the Sacramento Bee on June 21, 2008, “Retailers across California have eliminated more than 20,000 jobs in the past year. In greater Sacramento, 900 jobs have disappeared at hotels, restaurants and food-service companies since 2007.”

"The California economy is sputtering," said Jon C Mejia, national sales manager for Amlex. “And based on calls we’re getting from commercial real estate agents, this is just the tip of the iceberg.”

When Amlex asked restaurant operators a series of questions about the economy, a majority of them responded that they are scaling back expansion plans.

“This is as bad as any recession I’ve ever seen,” said one restaurant owner. “It seems more and more people are nesting and cooking at home to save money.”

With gas and other commodity prices exploding, both consumers and operators alike are bracing themselves for what appear to be turbulent financial waters ahead.
How to Get a California Liquor License Worth over $200,000 for Just $12,000

On April 8, 2008, a liquor license sold for $210,000.00 in Placer County California. Liquor licenses in many other CA counties routinely sell in the $50,000-$100,000 range effectively putting smaller restaurants at a huge disadvantage to the national restaurant chains who have deep pockets

"Small restaurant operators, the ma and pa types, are having a hard time, especially in this rough economic climate" says Jon C. Mejia, Senior Analyst with the American Liquor License Exchange (Amlex), a national, liquor license-brokering firm. "So the annual state liquor license 'lottery' is the best bet for the small guys to even the playing field."

For the last several years, liquor license prices in many California counties have been hitting record highs. This has prompted a greater interest in the priority application process, also known as the 'lottery'.

Each September the California Alcoholic Beverage Control Department accepts applications for new original on-sale general licenses for bona fide eating-places for just $12,000 in many, but not all, CA counties. To take part in the drawing, applicants must have been residents of California for at least 90 days prior to the listed date for the priority drawing.

"I'm advising my clients to file their applications early in order to avoid a lengthy wait," said Mejia, "Based on the volume of calls we're receiving, 2008 could have the largest number of applications ever recorded."
